  1. Our decision to amputate was so much more clear after meeting with the surgeon. Hope you find it to be the same. It’s a rough time making a tough decision, but you’re doing the right thing–getting all the information and feedback you can, and staying positive for Cookie. (is she a dog or a cat? Do you have pictures? 🙂 )

Hang in there…you’ve come to the right place for information, support and encouragement. My Fallon is going on 5 months following amputation, and just finished chemotherapy last month, and she’s rockin’ this. It gets easier once the rough decisions are made.

Keep us posted after your consult!!

    1. Hi Dawn,

She has suddenly stopped eating and that is a bad sign I know. If she continues to be off her food and water than she may not be a good candidate for treatment I will watch her closely for the next few days. I cannot put my reluctance to let go above what is realistic or appropriate for her. I cannot imagine putting her through surgery if she is to the point where she will continue to get sicker

  2. We understand the fear, the panic, the uncertainty, the sickening feeling….ohhh yeah….we understand!!

And recovery is no picnic for about two weeks and, if you’re like most of is, you’ll second guess your decision during those loooong sleepless nights!

IMPORTANT: You are doing this FOR Cookie and not TO her!!! And after recovery is over and her Sparkle comes back, you will realize that!! She will get on with living life to the fullest and won’t miss that bum leg at all!!!

  3. Hi Doug–hang in there. This is a VERY anxiety provoking time. Your concerns are good ones to raise when you talk to the surgeon, I am sure their perspective will give you some direction. No question you want the best for Cookie. Think through your questions, even write them down (I did–did not want to forget anything). Be frank about your concerns and have the surgeon address them, emphasizing what is realistic or appropriate.

Sally from here always says BREATHE…it’s great advice. The facts are out of our control at this point, but we can make good decisions based on what we learn are possibilities. You’ll do your best for your girl, that I’m sure of. I concur, this stage is most horrible, and I’m so sorry you’re going through this. But it’s all for love for Cookie. Remember to stay as positive as you’re able–for her, if nothing else.

I’ll say hang in there again–do your best anyway. We’ll be thinking of you and Cookie both–keep us posted.

    1. God Bless you both Isn’t this just the hardest thing, she is such a bundle of love my sweet pit bull girl. I am beside myself with worry

  4. So glad Dawn was avle ro get through. My responses are “waiting moderatuon”.
You got excellent advice from Dawn.

Yes, vet clear with your questions and concerns when speaking with the Surveon.

Is Cookie on anynpain meds now? The leg is probably painful and that wpuld be reason enough for her not wanting to eat.

If your Vet thinks Cookie is a good candidate and all her pre-op work is good, that can help calm your nerves some.

Let us know how the consultation gors and continue to stay connected! We’re here for you and with you!!

    1. Hi Benny

She is not limping much so Perhaps its just the cancer spreading in her that is taking away her desire to eat. Who Knows Maybe she will perk up and start eating again but if she does not then treatment would only be cruel. I do have pain meds and anti inflammatory I will give at night to be suire she can at least sleep good

  5. Hi Doug and Cookie,
Glad to have you here, sorry it is because your furbaby is sick. You might want to start a thread in the forums to make it easier to keep in touch with you. It is harder here in the forums. I cannot wait to see pictures of your sweet pittie!

  6. Hi Doug,
I was just leaving work when I got your last message. The Tripawds hotline is a great option when you are in the situation you are facing. Not knowing enough about your situation makes it hard to be helpful. You said her appetite was bad, but pain can do that. There are medicines to help with the appetite that sometimes work really well. There are dog pawrents in here that have faced very similar to what little you have mentioned.
You are fearful it is worse than you thought… but you won’t know that unless there is something that you have not mentioned. Some of the dogs in here have been in so much pain and there was a total turn around after the bad leg was removed.
I wish I knew more about what was going on, I just kind of bumped into this during some break down time at work. Please, please let me know how you make out. Looks like you have gotten some great advise already. Dawn went through a lot with Fallon, and Sally with her Hannah. There are people in here that have treated all stages of cancer at all different times. That is why I recommended going to the Forums, people will see you a lot quicker there and can provide a wealth of good solid information that may help you make your decision.

    1. Bless you. Read my latest blog. She is eAting again etc. shall I just keep this blog or start another ? What do you think Jackie.

  7. Great news. Her blood is good and the radiologist said no obvious lung legions and she ate her dinner. I think she will do ok with the surgery and treatment. I will go ahead with the pre op appointment and update everyone once the surgery is set

  8. Okay…this is my earlier post thst still is waiting to go through with “approval”.

Just thought I,d try and re-copy it and hope it goes through.

  9. Ooops…forgot to “re-copy”

    1. Bless you both I will find a way to post a pic. Not a computer guy as you probably can guess HA!

So glad to have words of wisdom from those that have been through this.

In the words of the very wise ” Benny” I am doing this FOR her not TO her!!

  13. Surgery is Tomorrow. I drop my baby off at 7:30 am and she stays 2 nights in the hospital and I bring her home on Sunday!

  14. I like the way you state it, “…doing it for Cookie and not to her…”

This has crossed my mind a couple of times with Roscoe, and I took some comfort from your words.

    Thanks for that.

Give Cookie a hug for me, eh?

    1. Its so True Jeffrey,

I had to keep telling myself that and that was the advice I got from Tri Pawds members. We have come quite a ways from my first vet only telling me she has 1 or 2 months to live and here are some pain pills.

Lets kick Cancers ass together!! Cookie duly hugged on your behalf and she sends you a big ol face lick!
